Our Story
Tangata Toa — The Warrior’s Brand — is more than just a name; it’s a legacy forged in the fires of passion, resilience, and honor.
From the Field to the Fight
My name is John Madden. At 42, I stand at the intersection of two worlds: the disciplined realm of professional baseball and the fierce arena of combat sports. My journey began on the baseball diamond, where I was drafted by the San Diego Padres and later selected in the Rule 5 Draft by the New York Mets. Baseball was my life — my passion, my identity. I played with the heart of a warrior, willing to fight and sacrifice for my teammates.
But after an injury ended my playing career, I found myself adrift, struggling to reignite that fire. For nearly 15 years, I searched for purpose, feeling disconnected from the warrior spirit that once defined me.
A Father, A Son, A New Beginning
That was until my 8-year-old son discovered Muay Thai at The Art of Combat under the guidance of Ajarn David Kurpetski. Watching him train, I felt a spark — a rekindling of that competitive drive. Inspired by his dedication, I joined him in the gym. The moment my gloves touched the pads, I knew I had found my calling again.
Immersed in the fight game, I devoured UFC matches, studied techniques, and trained relentlessly. Even though I had no intentions of fighting professionally, it brought me a sense of pride and confidence knowing I was taking steps to be a better protector to my family.
Building the Warrior’s Brand
I had already built a successful baseball retail business, so I decided to channel my passion into something new: a brand built for modern-day warriors — whether they’re fighting in the cage/ring, training in a gym, or just striving to protect and lead with honor in everyday life.
But I needed a name – something authentic, something that resonated with the warrior ethos.
Then I remembered a tattoo I had gotten years ago on my rib cage: Tangata Toa. In Tongan, it means “Warrior Man.” This phrase encapsulated everything I felt — the strength, the honor, the unyielding spirit.
A Legacy of Brotherhood and Strength
It was a tribute to the people who helped shape me. I grew up around a Tongan family that treated me as one of their own. Their father — Tonga Fifita, better known to the wrestling world as Meng or King Haku — was my second dad. He’s still known in the industry as the toughest man alive — A man whose presence commanded respect and whose integrity was unmatched. His wife, Dorothy, is just as fierce — the kind of woman who helped raise warriors. Their sons, my best friends, would go on to become Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and Talla Tonga, stars in the WWE and proud carriers of the warrior lineage.
From them, I learned what it really means to be a warrior: Courage. Discipline. Loyalty. Honor. Resilience. Strength. Sacrifice. Heart.
More Than Gear — A Warrior’s Movement
Thus, Tangata Toa was born — a brand dedicated to fighters who embody the warrior spirit. Our products are crafted with the highest quality materials. Whether you’re a professional, an amateur, or a parent protecting your family, if you train with heart, live with honor, and strive to be your best, you’re one of us.
And for my son, this is more than just a business. It’s a legacy. I’m teaching him that you don’t have to trade your time for money. That you can build something lasting — something that serves others and feeds your soul. I want him to know that no matter what life throws at you, with the right mindset — the mindset of a warrior — you can overcome anything.
Tangata Toa is more than gear; it’s a movement. A call to warriors everywhere to rise, to honor the fight, and to wear their spirit proudly.
- Tangata Toa is a tribute to every fighter.
- To those who never quit.
- To those who rise, again and again.
- To those who fight with heart.
Welcome to the warrior’s brand!
